Ask the Orthodontist
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.
What is an Orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a specialist who has completed a 2 to 3 year University education program following dental school to learn the special skills required to manage tooth movement and guide facial development.
What are some possible benefits of orthodontics?
- a more attractive smile
- better function of the teeth
- increased self-confidence
- teeth that are easier to clean
- reduce wear patterns of the teeth
- better long term health of teeth and gums
- more favourable eruption of the permanent teeth
- reduce the risk of injury to protruded front teeth
- aid in optimizing other dental treatment
What are some signs that orthodontic treatment may be required?
- upper front teeth protrude excessively over the lower teeth
- upper front teeth cover the majority of the lower teeth when biting together (deep bite)
- upper front teeth are behind or inside the lower front teeth (underbite)
- the upper and lower front teeth do not touch when biting together (open bite)
- crowded or overlapped teeth
- the center of the upper and lower teeth do not line up
- finger or thumb sucking habits which continue after 6 or 7 years old
- difficulty chewing
- teeth wearing unevenly or excessively
- the lower jaw shifts to one side or the other when biting together
- spaces between the teeth
At what age should orthodontic treatment begin?
The timing of orthodontic treatment depends on the type of malocclusion (bite and/or tooth alignment problem). Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if treatment is started at an early age during rapid growth. The timing of treatment can also depend on the stage of tooth eruption. In some cases treatment must be delayed until growth is nearly completed. The orthodontist will give advice regarding the best time for treatment.
Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?
Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age and approximately one quarter of current orthodontic patients are adults.
How does orthodontic treatment work?
Orthodontic appliances and braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth or guide jaw development. When braces are bonded on your teeth the archwire that fits between them applies the pressure to move the teeth.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Orthodontic treatment can take from 1 to 3 years or more depending on the type of malocclusion (bite and/or tooth alignment problem) and the complexity of the treatment required. The length of treatment can also be affected by growth and patient cooperation. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping treatment time on schedule.
Do braces hurt?
The placement of bands and braces on your teeth is not usually painful, however, the pressure from the archwires can cause some tooth soreness for a few days. Your lips and cheeks may need one or two weeks to get used to braces on your teeth.
Will braces interfere with playing sports?
Braces do not generally cause any problems while playing sports but it is recommended that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any contact sports.
Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?
Although there may be an initial period of adjustment braces should not interfere with playing an instrument. There have even been symphony members with braces! If necessary, brace covers can be provided to prevent discomfort while playing.
Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?
Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleanings and dental checkups.
