Surgical Orthodontics
What is surgical orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics is a special type of orthodontic treatment that combines tooth movement with braces and jaw repositioning using jaw surgery.
Who needs surgical orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics is considered when orthodontic treatment alone would be unable to adequately correct the malocclusion (bite problem).
How does it work?
The orthodontist will work with an oral surgeon to develop a treatment plan. Once a plan is confirmed braces will be placed to begin the presurgical phase of orthodontics. During the first 12 to 18 months of treatment the teeth are aligned and prepared for the jaw(s) to be moved. Then the surgery is performed in the hospital by the oral surgeon. The upper or the lower jaw or both may be moved. Following the surgery and a few weeks of healing the orthodontic treatment is continued in a postsurgical phase to refine the final result.
